App of the day – Flipboard
The first app I downloaded for the iPad way back when I first got it was Flipboard. I am sure most of the iPad users out there have at least heard of this app if not already use it. So you may be thinking that this is old news… hold on.
The reason I’m talking about Flipboard now, after years of use, is because I want you to look at it as a teaching tool for great content.
Flipboard is one of the most popular apps out there. It is on iPad, iPhone, Android, Kindle Fire and Nook platforms, and has been downloaded more than 20 million times (this statistic is a year old already). It is a social media aggregator that formats the feeds you choose to follow in a magazine like format.
Why I love this app for content creation.
The way Flipboard formats content into a magazine like layout shows you a very poignant snapshot of how people skim social media for the best content. It is naive to think that your followers read everything you post on your social accounts. But if you post your content specifically to grab “headline” attention, you may be doing yourself a huge favor.
Flip through your feeds on Flipboard and notice what photos grab your attention and what headlines you really look at. Then think about how you can incorporate that style of messaging in your posts. You don’t have to be a trained journalist to recognize or create a good headline. Think of it this way, you are competing with cute puppies and kittens for attention.
Learning to write a grabbing headline takes time and practice. Analyze what catches your eye and use that as a guide for your own headlines.
